Walking in the Pyrenees.

This is a fantastic area to explore on foot with many miles of beautiful French countryside to discover. Local walks include miles of communal forest, our local lake with its fantastic mountain backdrop and many many quiet rural villages to explore.

If you want something a little more challenging, head up into the mountains and choose from a huge selection of a marked routes taking in some of the most breathtaking scenery or sign up with a local guide for an approved route.

The Pyrenean National Park protects more than 46,000 hectares of land on the French side making it a fantastic unspoilt area to walk in. A rich assortment of flora can be discovered including over 400 different species such as the Pyrenean Violet or the Pyrenean Lily.

If you look upwards you might catch a glimpse of the Bearded Vulture or a Royal Eagle, whereas on the ground Marmots and Isards roam free - as does the odd bear!

There are numerous walks to discover in all of the valleys in this part of the Pyrenees. The Ossau Valley, Aspe Valley and Cauterets Valley are but a few.

Guided Walking Holidays in the Pyrenees.

If you would like to have a guided walking holiday or maybe a day in the mountains taking photos of the wildlife then our guide Xavier is available.

Originally from Nantes, Xavier discovered the Pyrenees as a child during winter and summer holidays. Having fallen in love with these mighty mountains, he came here to finish his studies and finally, to settle here.

Today, as mountain guide and environmental presenter, he invites you to follow him along the mountain paths to discover a fabulous natural environment and exceptional cultural heritage. And if like Xavier, you have a passion for photography, he can take you into the spectacular landscapes of our valleys at a time when the light is magical.

" For me, the photograph is a way of prolonging the emotions and privileged moments experienced in the mountains. To become immersed in the atmosphere of magnificent scenery, to immortalise the expression of a wild animal, or to plunge the intimate depths of a flower - the  natural history of  the Pyrenees is an inexhaustible subject".

Xavier would be delighted to guide you and your  camera along the footpaths of our valleys!

Our guide is available to guide you on the many HRP  or GR10 walks of the Pyrenees and you can even add a stop over in one of the safe houses available.

As well as photography he can also accompany you for a days Bird watching, animal tracking or searching for Pyrenean Botanics. Snow shoe walking is also available in the winter months.

Please contact us at allons-y-pyrenees@hotmail.co.uk for further info and prices if you want to add a day with Xavier to your self catered holiday.

All photos in this section have been taken by Xavier Dornier. He has a fantastic portfolio of photos taken in the mountains which can been seen in the form of an photographic evening presentation.
